Into The Darkness| Casey and Mya Pt.9

Wait! Before you read this check out Pt. 8

Casey stood in the middle of the dark hallway of their and their twin brother Cainโ€™s tenth group home. Turning their head to the right, Casey took in the clock that hung on the wall; it was about one in the morning. Earlier that night, their foster parents had ushered them as well as nine other children off to bed without dinner. Casey had been woken up several times throughout the night due to the growling of not only their own stomach, but a couple of their other roommates’ stomachs as well. Then, around eleven or so, Casey had had enough, slipping into their slippers, they crept across the room only to be stopped by Carson, one of the older kids.

โ€œWhere the hell are you going?!โ€ Carson whisper yelled into the darkness.

โ€œDownstairs, weโ€™re all starving.โ€  Casey replied.

โ€œI already checked the pantry, twice, thereโ€™s nothing in there.โ€ Carson said.

Casey shook their head, despite knowing that he couldnโ€™t see them.

โ€œNo, you checked our pantry, thereโ€™s still another one.โ€ They said,

There was a ruffeling of sheets, probably Carson rushing to the edge of his bed.

โ€œAre you insane? Theyโ€™ll kill you!โ€ Carson whisper-yelled.

โ€œThatโ€™s if they find me.โ€ Casey pointed out.

Knowing that they were wasting precious time arguing with him, Casey quickly worked to end the conversation.

โ€œCarson chill, if I get caught Iโ€™ll just pretend to be sleep walking or some shit.โ€ Casey said.

Casey then grabbed the doorknob when Carson called out to them again.

โ€œCasey, wait! Can you get me something too?โ€ He asked.

โ€œOf course. Iโ€™m not selfish Carson.โ€ They said before opening the bedroom door.

After quietly closing the door, Casey made their way down the hall. Moving slowly, and using their hands to feel around, Casey made their way all the way downstairs and into the kitchen. Luckily for them, the moonlight from the window was enough to allow them to see that the pantry door was missing itโ€™s padlock that it usually wore.

โ€œScore!โ€ Casey whispered.

Making their way over to the door, they reached for the lock just as the kitchen light flicked on. Whipping around, they came face to face with their angry foster dad, Ray.

โ€œWhat do you think youโ€™re doing?โ€ Ray asked as he crossed his arms over his chest.

Caseyโ€™s heart slammed against their ribs as their knees locked up and their legs began to shake. Opening and closing their mouth, Casey tried to form words, but nothing would come out.

โ€œI asked you a question!โ€ Ray shouted, causing Casey to nearly jump out of their skin.

โ€œWhat. The hell. Do you. Think. Youโ€™re doing?!โ€ He asked again.

Again Casey opened their mouth but with the hand of fear grasping at their throat, there was no way any words were coming out.

Rayโ€™s nostrils flared as he gripped the extension cord that hung around his neck; With his eyes trained on Casey, he slowly moved towards them.

โ€œLeave Casey alone!โ€ Shouted a voice, causing Casey and Rayโ€™s heads to whip towards the door.

Cain emerged from the darkness with his hands balled into tight fists, ready for a fight.

โ€œYou! I should have known you had something to do with this. Come here!โ€ Ray shouted pointing to the spot directly in front of him.

โ€œCome get me.โ€ Cain said before turning around and taking off into the darkness.

As Cain took off, Ray took off after him. Then, not even a moment after Ray vanished into the darkness there was a loud clap, like thunder ripping through the sky, followed by the sound of Cain crying out in pain.

The sound crashed into Casey like waves and echoed in their ears, causing Casey to come crashing back into reality. As a tear landed on their cheek, Casey felt the warmth of Myaโ€™s hand on their shoulder.

โ€œCasey, are you okay?โ€ She asked, causing them to shake their head.

โ€œWhat? Yeah, I’m fine. I just-โ€ The sound of Cainโ€™s cry echoed in their head.

It was like Cain was standing right next to them.

Closing their eyes, Casey shook their head again.

โ€œHey, want some water?โ€ Mya asked, causing Casey to nod.

โ€œWater sounds great.โ€ They said.

So, sliding their hand down Caseyโ€™s arm, Myaโ€™s hand found theirs and she laced their fingers together. Then, gently tugging on Caseyโ€™s arm, she pulled them to their feet and began leading them back into the house.

After what happened on the porch, Mya thought itโ€™d be best if she didnโ€™t ask about Cain anymore. So after leading Casey to the kitchen and getting them some water, she pulled them back into the living room where they spent the rest of the night drinking and dancing with Myaโ€™s friends. At the end of the night, since Casey and the sisters had quite a bit to drink, they as well as a couple other party goers decided to crash at Chelseaโ€™s.
