Wait, have you read ‘Leo LaVine‘?
Dani stood in the middle of her apartment locked in a three-way staring contest with Leo and Mikey LaVine.
“This wasn’t supposed to happen.” Leo said, his voice raw and filled with emotion.
Dani said nothing as she continued to look back and forth between the men.
This whole thing felt like a dream.
“I need a drink.” Dani said, fully entering the apartment and closing the door.
Leo and Mikey said nothing as the detective made her way across her apartment and over to the kitchen. The LaVine brothers simply watched as Dani ripped open the freezer and grabbed the bottle of Cîroc.
“Want some?” She asked, looking at the brothers.
Leo and Mikey looked at one another before shrugging.
“Yeah sure.” Leo said.
The men approached the bar and sat down on the stools.
“You get milk.” Dani said, pointing at the younger LaVine brother.
After getting the brothers their drinks, Dani leaned against the figure and stared straight ahead at the wall.
“He shot her.” Dani whispered.
It had been at least twelve hours since it’d happened, and she still couldn’t believe it.
“Wait what?! Who shot who?!” The LaVine brothers said simultaneously.
Dani turned towards the LaVine men; shit, she’d forgotten they were there.
Setting her glass down, she shook her head.
“I told her it wasn’t a good idea.” Dani began.
The day before the shooting….
Dani lied in bed staring up at the ceiling fan. As she watched the fan go round and round, her mind raced a mile a minute, playing out all the things that could go wrong.
“Go to sleep.” Paula mumbled from beside her.
“I can’t, my mind’s in overdrive.” Dani said, looking over at Paula.
Paula cracked an eye open, groaning as she saw Dani looking back at her.
Opening her eyes fully, Paula signed.
“Great, now I’m awake.” Paula said, opening her eyes and rolling over onto her back.
“I’m sorry.” Dani said.
“Uh-huh, I’m sure you are.” Paula said.
Dani rolled over onto her side and pressed a kiss to Paula’s naked shoulder. Over the last couple of months, Dani had fallen harder for Paula than she’d fallen for anyone before.
“I’m just worried. I don’t want anything to happen to you.” Dani said.
Paula leaned into Dani, kissing the officer’s forehead before leaning in to kiss her soft and slow.
“Don’t worry about me, I’ll be fine. Trust me.” Paula said.
“And I did trust her, and now look, I’m standing her alone, while she lies in a hospital bed.” Dani said, her voice breaking.
Leo pulled Dani into him, allowing her to hide in his chest.
Holding onto Leo as if she were a plastic bag about to blow away in the wind, Dani let it all out; she cried and cried, soaking Leo’s stomach with her tears.
“Oh fuck, I’m so sorry. She’s your sister, I should be comforting the two of you.” Dani said.
“It’s fine, it’s hard when the one you love is lying in a hospital bed.” Leo said.
Unable to go to sleep without Paula by her side, Dani and the LaVine brothers decided to stay up all night.
Sitting in the living room, they ate snacks while Leo told Mikey and Dani stories of when he and Paula were younger.
The next day, Dani and the brothers headed off to the hospital bright and early. By the time they arrived, Paula was wide awake and talking to Jackson who sat beside her bed.
“Baby!” Paula called out, as Dani and the LaVine brothers walked into the hospital room.
Paula’s smile fell as she took in her older brother.
“Leo?” She said, her eyes wide with disbelief.
“Hey sis.” He said.
Holding out her arms, Paula beckoned her brother over.
Being as gentle as possible, Leo embraced his sister before taking the seat Jackson had vacated for him.
On the other side of Paula’s bed, Mikey took Dani’s mother’s seat and scooted his chair closer to his sister’s bed.
“Why don’t we give The LaVines some privacy.” Jackson suggested.
Dani and her mother nodded, but as the trio made their way to the door, Paula called out for Dani.
Stopping in her tracks, Dani smiled as she saw Paula reaching out for her.
“Don’t extend so much, you’re gonna hurt yourself.” Dani said as she made her way to Paula’s bedside.
Leaning over the other woman, Dani kissed her deeply before pressing a few little kisses to Paula’s lips.
Thereafter, Dani followed her parents out the door, giving The LaVines some privacy.
